The South of France is truly a beautiful area with lots of subjects to paint. There is Avignon, a large medieval city with winding cobblestone streets, ancient building, at any turn surprising little plazas with cafes, fruit and vegetable vendors, patisseries, bakeries with their aromatic smells. Entering out onto a huge plaza with the enormous Pope’s Palace surrounded by numerous cafes with outdoor umbrellas, tables and chairs.
A relatively short distance from Avignon is some wonderful striking Roman ruins. They are a marvel to see in their environment. I particularly like the weathered white of the marble. It is anything but white. It’s the light and the gentle cast shadows on the weathered ruin that touches me deeply. Though it does not have a “local color”, I am thrilled of the color of the aging process. Again I was not clear where to exhibit this pastel, thus I am making it available for you to consider.
