This  Santa Fe 5 ½ day over the weekend Mentoring program is truly unique, not only are Santa Fe and Northern New Mexico beautiful and very paintable but Santa Fe is the 3rd largest Art Market in the County, with a strong emphasis on Realism – this will allow us to combine painting and career building in a unique way.

Our painting subject matter will vary: from tucked away historic adobe buildings, surrounded by magnificent old growth Cottonwood trees, to wide open high desert landscapes with incredible skies, and aspen groves and mountain streams.

A non-refundable tuition deposit of $200 is required to register. The full tuition amount is $800. This program is limited to 15 attendees. After that, it will be closed and a waiting list will be started.

To sign up: Please contact the Albert Handell Studio directly via phone or email.

A receipt will be sent to you for your tuition deposit. We will appreciate receiving the $600.00 balance due on your tuition by May 14, 2017, two months before the first day of the workshop. Receiving the full tuition two months prior to the workshop will help us from overbooking.

OUR FIRST MEETING is Thursday afternoon from 5 PM to 7:30 PM we will meet in the lobby at the historic El Rey Inn for our first introductory session.
Albert will give out important information on plein air painting, as well as discuss details about the week’s schedule.

At 7:30 PM, we will have our first workshop dinner together (individual checks please) at the Pantry Restaurant, which is practically right next door at 1820 Cerrillos Road; The Pantry serves traditional and delicious Northern New Mexican and American food and is a well known  local family restaurant.

The next morning, Friday, we will meet at 9AM and paint on the El Rey grounds.

The El Rey in is located at 1862 Cerrillos Road

This map is from El Rey Inn to Albert’s Home/Studio, at 1109 Don Gaspar Ave.

Each morning we will all meet on location at 9 AM and paint until no later than noon. Albert will paint along with you with pastel or his unique watercolor/pastel technique, and help each artist at their individual easel.

From noon to 2:00 PM will be a lunch break – we have 2 Whole Foods located nearby which both have an excellent selection of salads, soups, and hot plates. Lunch there is fast, delicious, varied, and reasonably priced.

From 2:00 to 4:00 PM we will meet at Albert’s home and studio, located at 1109 Don Gaspar Ave. for our daily critique and for eye-opening career building information. At this time Albert will also lead the beginning of an indoor oil painting demonstration.

From 4:00 to 7:30 PM, when the light is most beautiful and we are rested, and the heat of the day is over, we will paint our second painting of the day. Albert will give each artist individual help at the easel.

After the critique during the afternoon, you will have the opportunity to explore Santa Fe. From 3:30 to 4:30pm we will meet at the Ventana Gallery (400 Canyon Road), and Albert will explain to you how he is organizing his One Man Show.

Tuesday evening, for our final farewell dinner, at 7:00 P.M. we will meet at the Rio Chama Restaurant, 414 Old Santa Fe trail (505-955-0765).

I recommend starting Tuesday afternoon off with the Georgia O’Keefe museum (217 Johnson St, Santa Fe, NM 87501)

In addition to Santa Fe’s wonderful selection of museums, there are two art gallery districts in Santa Fe which exhibit realism:

  • The West Palace Ave. art district (which is right around the corner from the Georgia O’Keefe Museum), is where galleries line both sides of the street. The Fine Art Museum is right next door, as is the plaza, with shops and restaurants.
  • And The Canyon Road Galleries, which are located on Canyon Road some distance away. If you decide to visit the Canyon Road galleries, which are in a different area, please start with Nedra Matteucci Gallery and Garden (1075 Paseo de Peralta, Santa Fe, NM 87501. Phone: 505-982-4631)

After your tuition has been paid in full, a full refund minus the $200.00 nonrefundable deposit is offered to you for any reason until Sunday, June 13, 2017 – ONE MONTH prior to the first date of the programDue to the very small program size, no cash or credit card refunds can be offered after this date.

Santa Fe has a wide range of accommodations; all are good and vary in price. My first choice and recommendation for a reasonably priced and charming Inn are the accommodations at the El Rey Inn.

The El Rey Inn – has that special old Santa Fe charm (, located at 1862 Cerrillos Rd., built in 1973 (when Cerrillos Rd. was considered outside of the city limits), you can make the reservations by phone 505-982-1931, or visit their website.

There is a 10% discount for AAA or AARP, and also ask if you are staying longer for their interesting promotional- EL REY PASSPORT- with this “EL Rey Passport” for every five nights you stay there the sixth night is free, it’s a bargain, please speak with Andrea Ellison, who is the general manager, or anyone who is at the desk-any problems with this please contact me.untitled7
